Tricks of Ear and Eye
Stimuli and Sounds for Reuse
Updated
The material on Tricks of Ear and Eye falls under several sets of rights. Every figure caption and every audio clip carries its own credit line, and that credit line decides. This page explains the categories behind them.
Figures, stimulus drawings, CSV files and sounds made by this site
Diagrams, stimulus drawings, charts, CSV data files and synthesized demonstration sounds made by this site are released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license (CC BY 4.0). You may copy, adapt and share them, including commercially, as long as you give credit.
Each figure made by this site has a credit line you can copy, in this form:
"{title of the figure}" by Tricks of Ear and Eye, {address of the page}, licensed under CC BY 4.0, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
Each synthesized sound has a credit line in the same form:
"{name of the sound}" by Tricks of Ear and Eye, {address of the page}, licensed under CC BY 4.0, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/
A link back to the page is welcome and is one reasonable way to credit it. It is not a condition of reuse beyond what CC BY 4.0 itself asks.
The license covers only what this site drew or computed. When a figure is drawn over a third-party image, the caption says so and credits that image separately, after the words "Underlying image".
Work built on CC BY-SA data
Some tables and charts are computed from data released under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license, such as color data published by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE). ShareAlike requires work built on that data to carry the same license, so those files are released under CC BY-SA 4.0, and their credit line ends with "licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/" instead. Each one names the CIE dataset it uses, in the citation form CIE gives for that dataset.
Photographs, paintings and other third-party material
Photographs, reproductions of paintings and other material from outside sources keep their own licenses. Their captions give the full credit:
"{title}" by {creator} — {source page} — {license} ({license address})
When the image has been cropped, adjusted or annotated, the credit ends with "; modified:" and the changes made. Credit goes to the creator, or to whoever the source names, not to the archive that holds the file.
Public-domain material is credited the same way, with "Public domain" and the basis for it in place of a license: the creator's death year and the jurisdiction it applies in, or an official public-domain statement. That status is established one file at a time.
If you adapt material released under CC BY-SA, ShareAlike applies to your adaptation, not this site's CC BY.
Works reproduced under their creators' terms
Some works are not openly licensed, but their creators set out terms for reuse on their own pages. Where this site reproduces such a work, it does so only within those terms, without changes, credited as a third-party work, and it does not release that work under CC BY. Where the terms cannot be confirmed, the entry describes the work in words and links to the creator's page instead.
Data sources
CIE datasets are released by CIE under CC BY-SA 4.0, which allows redistribution. Files this site derives from them follow the ShareAlike rule above.
Other sources are used for checking only and are not reproduced here. Where a publisher allows its pages to be read but not redistributed, entries cite the source and quote individual numbers, and its tables, figures and text are not copied.
Illustrations
Some entries include illustrations. They are not released under CC BY. Each carries this credit line, which states the terms for reusing it:
"Illustration: Tricks of Ear and Eye. Generated schematic image — not a photograph, specimen record or perceptual simulation. Reuse permitted with this credit line; provided as is."
Fonts
The site's three typefaces are released under the SIL Open Font License, Version 1.1 (license text).
Manrope, used for headings: Copyright 2019 The Manrope Project Authors.
Atkinson Hyperlegible, used for body text: Copyright 2020 Braille Institute of America, Inc.
Roboto Mono, used for data and captions: Copyright 2015 The Roboto Mono Project Authors.
Citing a page
Each entry ends with a Cite this page block. It names Tricks of Ear and Eye as author and gives the title, the publication date, the date of the last substantive revision and the page address. Add the date you accessed the page. The site does not issue DOIs, so a citation of a page on this site has none.
