Tricks of Ear and Eye

Cookies and Counting

Updated

This page explains what Tricks of Ear and Eye measures, what it stores in your browser, and what it does not do. It was last updated on 2026-10-29.

Google Analytics

The site uses Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which pages are read. Google Analytics uses cookies. When it runs, your browser sends Google information that includes the address of the page you are reading and your IP address, which Google may use to estimate your general location. Google explains its use of that information on its page "How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services".

Whether Google Analytics runs depends on where you connect from. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, it is not loaded until you accept it in the cookie notice: before that, nothing is sent to Google Analytics and no Google Analytics cookie is written. If you reject it, it is never loaded. If the site cannot tell where you are connecting from, it treats you as being in one of those regions.

After you accept, Google Analytics loads with advertising storage, advertising user data and ad personalization all set to denied. Outside those regions, Google Analytics loads with the page.

Google signals and data sharing with Google are switched off for this site, and Google Analytics event data is kept for 14 months.

Changing your choice

Your choice is stored in this browser's local storage, so the notice does not return on every page. To change it, use the cookie settings link at the foot of any page. Rejecting stops Google Analytics from loading from then on. To remove Google Analytics cookies that were already set, clear this site's cookies in your browser settings.

Cloudflare Web Analytics

The site is delivered through Cloudflare, which runs Cloudflare Web Analytics for every visitor in every region. It counts page views and measures how quickly pages load, and the data is sent to an address on this site's own domain. It does not use cookies or local storage. The cookie notice does not turn it on or off. To block it, set your content blocker to block static.cloudflareinsights.com.

What the site stores in your browser

Your cookie choice, in local storage under the key privacy-choice-83c4, as described above.

If you use the light and dark switch, that choice is also stored in this browser's local storage, under the key eareye-scheme. It is written only when you press the switch.

Google Analytics cookies, only when Google Analytics runs.

Sounds, fonts and other files

Audio clips load only when you press play. Fonts, images and sounds are served from this site. Apart from the two counting tools above, pages load no third-party fonts, embedded media or tracking code.

Advertising

The site shows no advertising. If that changes, this page will be updated to name the advertising provider and the cookies it uses.

Regions

The site is not served to visitors in mainland China or Russia.
